Hard-working volunteers at the Esther Honey Foundation are trying to raise about $8000 to buy a new vehicle – and made a healthy sum selling baked goods this week.

The Animal Clinic, which has treated more than 38,000 animals since being established in 1995, lost its previous car to an engine seizure at the end of February.

Practice Manager Amy Compton said the team now has its eyes set on a nice pick-up truck but still needs to raise another $4500.

“We’re pretty excited about it but we’ve only got about $3500 so far, so we’re working hard on it. This pick-up would meet our needs perfectly.”

The truck will be used for collecting and returning animals in need of de-sexing, and for attending emergency call-outs when animals are injured.

“Most people here just have motorbikes. How are you going to throw a 25kg dog on a bike and bring it to us safely? Compton said.

The truck will also be used to pick up volunteers as they fly into the country, and animals as they arrive for treatment from the outer islands.

Compton said the team was blown away by the generosity of runners at Hash House Harriers earlier this week.

An anonymous donor provided baking ingredients, which Compton and colleague Michelle Gray whipped into a range of delicious goods over an entire day.

They visited Hash the next day and managed to sell the tasty goods for an impressive $350.

“That’s a lot of money for just a small amount of baked goods! Hash House Harriers have been great supporters,” Compton said.

She described the kindness shown by Hash members as “spectacular”.

Other funds have come in from donations and raffles, and the team is organising a trivia night to be held on August 4, with more details to come.

Compton also thanked Island Car and Bike Hire, which kindly donated the team a vehicle to use for some time, and Raro Cars, which is renting them a car now at a special price.

Anyone keen to get behind the cause and help Esther Honey buy a vehicle can contact the clinic on 22336, or 75310 after hours.
